Instructions before the examination in the Gastroenterology Department

Esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) - endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum

is an examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum by an endoscopic device. The device is usually inserted through mouth, in some cases through nose.

  • You shall reserve about 40 minutes, the examination itself usually takes about 10 minutes, in case of special procedures more.
  • 8 hours before the examination do not eat anything, 4-8 hours before the examination, drink only clean water, 3 hours before the examination, do not drink any more water.
  • Necessary medication can be taken in the morning up until 3 hours before the examination.
  • If administration of sedatives or therapeutic treatment is required, escort by a close person of the patient is required!

Colonoscopy - endoscopic examination of the colon

is an examination of the colon by an endoscopic device. The device is inserted through the rectum or ostomy.

  • You shall reserve about 60 minutes, the endoscopy itself takes about 30 minutes (depending on the shape of the intestine and the complexity of possible therapeutic procedure).
  • The preparation usually consists of a residue-free diet lasting about 5 days, a liquid diet 24 hours before the examination and drinking cleansing solution usually in the evening before the examination and in the morning on the day of the examination.
  • Necessary medication can be taken in the morning up until 3 hours before the examination.
  • Do not drink water 3 hours before the examination.
  • If administration of sedatives or therapeutic treatment is required, escort by a close person of the patient is required!
