BREAST DIAGNOSTICS CENTER

Mammography (MMG)

Location: Main Building, ground floor

Daily operation: 7 a.m. - 2:12 p.m. (excluding weekends and holidays)

Tel.: + 421 53 378 215

Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breasts with a very low dose of radiation. It is a globally accepted preventive breast examination in asymptomatic women, in the Slovak Republic recommended to women after the age of 40. It also serves as a diagnostic method for imaging pathological processes of breasts in women with symptoms of breast disease.

Mammography is performed on a digital MMG device Giotto Image SDL. Each breast is imaged in 2 projections. The breast must be compressed during the examination, which can be painful. Thanks to the fully digital MMG device, the X-ray image is displayed directly on the screen.

Pre-examination instructions:

  • If a woman suffers from breast pain related to the menstrual cycle, the examination is ideally to be scheduled in the first half of the menstrual cycle.
  • It is necessary to make an appointment in advance for MMG.
  • Please register at the Mammography and Sonography registration - Main Building, ground floor.
  • Before the examination, it is necessary to submit a request from a specialist of the National Cancer Institute - a gynecologist, oncosurgeon, mammologist.
  • Do not use deodorants or other cosmetics on the breast and armpit area.

Which women should undergo examination:

  • MMG examinations should be performed in women aged 40-69, every 2 years.
  • Patients with an increased risk of breast cancer can be referred for MMG before reaching the age of 40 - based on the indication of the attending physician.
  • Pregnant patients undergo MMG examination only if they have an urgent suspicion of breast cancer.

After examination:

  • Your referring physician will receive the result of the MMG examination.

Breast Ultrasound (USG)

Ultrasound (ultrasonography) examines the breasts using ultrasonic waves that do not harm the patient with radiation, and therefore can be repeated as needed. USG breast examination is especially suitable for women under 40, pregnant women. It serves to closer specify tactile lesions in the breast, to differentiate lumps found in MMG and MRI, and to suspect an implant rupture. At our center, we use a USG device ALOKA ARIETA 70 for examination. Mammography is the first diagnostic method for women over 40 years of age.

Breast interventions

Breast interventions are performed under mammography (stereotactic biopsies) or ultrasound control:

  • thin - needle biopsies with sampling for cytological examination
  • core cut biopsies - with sampling for histological examination
  • vacuum biopsy - with sampling for histological examination
  • insertion of localization leads into intangible lesions in the breast before surgery

Pre-examination instructions:

  • Before the intervention procedure, your physician will instruct you on the nature of the procedure and will explain the risks.
  • It is necessary to make an appointment for the intervention in advance (except in urgent cases).
  • Please register at the Mammography and Sonography registration - Main Building, ground floor.
  • Before the examination, it is necessary to submit a request from a specialist of the National Cancer Institute - a gynecologist, oncosurgeon, mammologist.
  • If you are taking medicines that affect blood clotting (e. g. warfarine, anopyrine), you must inform your referring physician in advance. If necessary, change the use according to the instructions.

Which women should undergo examination:

  • according to the indication of the referring physician

After examination:

  • Your referring physician will receive the result of the examination.

Department of Computed Tomography (CT)

Location: Main building, - 1st floor (basement)

Computed tomography (CT) while using X-rays allows for a closer depiction of the body organs in thin layers - diagnostics of diseases, injuries and it is used to determine the extent of cancer in cancer patients and to assess the effect of monitoring the success of treatment. CT examination is performed on a CT device Siemens Somatom Sensation 16.

Pre-examination instructions:

  • It is necessary to make an appointment for a CT in advance (except in urgent cases).
  • A request from a specialist is required for the examination.
  • Eating is not allowed 4-6 hours before the examination.
  • It is possible to drink water and unsweetened tea, no later than 2 hours before the examination, it is possible to drink clean water and unsweetened tea in limited quantities.
  • Take your medication as usual in the morning before examination.
  • Before examination, please register at the CT registration - Main Building, ground floor.
  • Depending on your physician's request, you may be ordered to drink a liquid before your CT scan (some of them may have a bitter taste).
  • In case of pelvic examination, you may be prescribed a rectal infusion.
  • Upon examination of the lesser pelvis in women, it is necessary to have a vaginal tampon in place (you can use a normal menstrual tampon).
  • If you sign a consent with the examination, you will be laid on the examination table by radiology assistant.
  • An iodine-containing contrast agent is usually inserted into a vein. Some people might feel warm during its administration - this is a normal side effect. The contrast agent may cause an allergic reaction.
  • If you are allergic to medicines or certain food, inform your physician of the fact, in some cases you shall undergo anti-allergy treatment before the examination.

You should specifically warn your physician before a CT scan if you are a patient:

  • with an allergic reaction to iodine
  • with asthma
  • with impaired renal function
  • dehydrated patients
  • pregnant women and nursing mothers
  • patients with suspected hormonally active adrenal tumor - pheochromocytoma
  • patients with overactive thyroid gland
  • patients taking orally diabetes medicines that contain metformine
  • patients treated with radioiodine must not receive a contrast agent because it contains iodine which blocks radioiodine treatment

Instructions after examination:

  • Drink plenty of fluids in order to get the contrast agent out of the body as quickly as possible.
  • In exceptional cases, after the administration of contrast agents allergy symptoms may occur within 24 hours or later, most commonly itching or a rash. Please inform your referring physician about this reaction. Mild allergic reactions do not require treatment. However, if your symptoms worsen, contact your physician.
  • In case of a minor leakage of the contrast agent outside of the vein, it is necessary to apply cold compresses on the affected area 3 times a day for 15 to 60 minutes.

After examination:

  • The result of your CT examination will be sent to the referring doctor.
